For years I've wanted to make a Harry Potter vid series set to my favorite songs from Disney's Fantasia, exploring every aspect of Harry's world in loving detail. But first I had to wait for all the movies to come out and then when they finally did, and I gathered the music to start editing the playlist, I became overwhelmed by the prospect. So I worked on it off and on for what seems like an eternity, until last summer when I fully committed to the project again and sat down and just vidded the darn thing.

It's 23 minutes long in length, which I know is crazy long, but I'm hoping some of you might nevertheless be interested in seeing the vid series in its entirety since I created it with the idea that it would play as one piece. If, however, you don't have the time/inclination to watch it all in one go, I uploaded each vid file separately to YouTube and AO3, too, so people could also jump to a certain section if they're particularly interested in that song/subject matter.

I wanted to thank [personal profile] astolat for giving me technical assistance last year. My HP source wouldn't look half as lovely without your help. And I also wanted to doff my cap to Luminosity. I saw your Buffy/Beatles masterpiece when I attended VVC in '05 and it knocked my socks off. Scooby Road really, really inspired me and without that experience, I doubt I would've ever imagined attempting a project of this scope. (And 'this scope' only entails 8 movies as opposed to 7 seasons of Buffy and clocks in at half the time of Scooby Road, and yet I still drove myself batty and almost quit a dozen times!).

Anyway, here's the whole shebang in its entirety --

Title: Phantasia
Music: Leopold Stokowski and The Philadelphia Orchestra
Fandom: Harry Potter
Also on AO3

And then here's each individual part if you want to skip around. BTW I submitted The Tale of the Three Brothers to the VividCon 2017 Premieres vidshow and Something Wicked to the Challenge vidshow so if you want to skip down to see either, they're 9 and 10 listed below

1. Prologue
Song: Toccata And Fugue In D Minor, BWV 565
Also on AO3

2. Welcome to Hogwarts
Song: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
Also on AO3

3. The Weasleys
Song: Chinese Dance
Also on AO3

4. The Professors
Song: Dance of the Hours
Also on AO3

5. Magical Mishaps
Song: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Also on AO3

6. House Rivalry
Song: Russian Dance
Vidder's note: This vid started as a more generalized Gryffindor vs Slytherin type thing, but quickly devolved into Harry vs Draco. For reasons. Sorry not sorry.
Also on AO3

7. A Storm is Coming
Song: Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral)
Vidder's note: This was unofficially entitled 'I Came Out to Have a Good Time and I'm Honestly Feeling So Attacked Right Now' and I still think it's a great fit for the vid.
Also on AO3

8. Poisoning the Well
Song: Rite of Spring
Also on AO3

9. The Tale of the Three Brothers
Song: Arabian Dance
Vidder's note: Years ago I was bummed when I spotted online that I wasn't the only one who'd pieced it together that Tom, Severus and Harry were meant to represent the three brothers. And then I was even more bummed when I saw they'd expanded on the theory and concluded Dumbledore was Death! That truly hadn't occurred to me, but it made so much sense! In making this vid, I was blown away by how neatly Albus fit into the tale in that role. Anyway, this was far and away my favorite vid of the entire lot, the one I was looking forward to making for years, so I hope it doesn't disappoint.
Also on AO3

10. Something Wicked
Song: Night on Bald Mountain
Also on AO3

11. Coming of Age
Song: Waltz of the Flowers
Also on AO3

WOW. I'm speechless. I mean... this is is incredible ! Epic, even. I watched the full 20min vid in one go first and then rewatched them individually, and you kept me interested the whole time. I'm glad I watched them in order: they flow into each other naturally and you make great use of the changes in mood and tempo in the music!

My favorites are probably Tale of the Three Brothers (I've read some meta about it recently and seeing it in vid form was really something), and Coming of Age made me super emotional (Trio feels!). Also, Magical Mishaps was particularly fun. But, really, I love the whole thing <3

Commenting so as not to lose this in my list again! Have to get to my desktop to watch the vids, but I really want to, since I love Fantasia.

Okay! Managed to sit down and watch the whole thing through. Notes random as I managed to scribble while trying not to miss anything.

Loved Ollivander sliding in on the oboe/bassoon thing. I always pictured him as a deep-voiced instrument.

Sugar Plum fairies - excellent as an introduction/initiation into the new world Harry's joined. A beautiful, otherworldly piece of music for a whole hidden world. I especially liked the shots of the ceiling changing right on the beats there, verra good yes.

Weasleys as the Chinese dancers! Ahaha, nice. The rush and speed and swirling motion of them all. Wonderful pairing of theme and image.

EEEEEEEEeeeEEEEEEE, Sorcerer's Apprentice! All the things that can go wrong! And then the teachers swooping in to save the day each time. PERFECTLY matched, I loved this sequence.

Russian dancers! The rivalry, the competition! This is my favorite part of Fantasia, and I adored how you put the pieces together here for Slytherin vs. Gryffindor. Excellent.

Bald Mountain - Ooooh, the DE's as the dark spirits and Voldemort as Chernabog! That worked out like it was planned. The quick cuts/beats of the Horcruxes, and then the deaths matched to the bells, sliding into the bright sunshine.

And the last sequence, showing the flashes back and forth from beginning to end, young kids to young adults. Thought your choices of shots there were good ones.

Overall, lovely! Well-done and planned, and fitted to the music just right. Great job!

*nod* I thought that was an especially powerful way to go about it. I wondered if you were going to slide into the Ave, but I thought it made a much more striking finale to that sequence to glide through the bells into the sunlight. It's the promise of brighter things while acknowledging the pain. You covered it very well there.

Oh, what a great idea and project! I watched "Something Wicked" first, via a Vividcon post, and liked it so much that I decided to check out the whole series. Which I've now watched twice to better catch everything. There are so many beautiful vidding choices you made and the musicality is lovely, kept me engaged all the way through.

"Something Wicked" is still one of my favourite parts, I was fascinated that you captured the darkness and the horror elements of the canon so well there.

"The Tale of the Three Brothers" is indeed fantastic. I hadn't made the character connections before, so I loved getting this new perspective on canon and you did a wonderful job interweaving the scenes.

But really, every part of this is well thought out and distinctive and has some particularity I love. Will be watching this again in the future I'm sure.

I've been thinking that these movies really lend themselves to vids with instrumental classical music, what with all the great visuals and the dynamic shots full of movement. It was fun to follow how you used the instrumental cues and changes to introduce new characters or concepts within the vids. Love the moment Hermione shows up in the "Welcome to Hogwarts" vid for example. Harry going up the staircase to Dumbledore's office is another one I adore, or all the Great Hall shots.

And speaking of dark imagery, I found "Poisoning the Well" fascinating as well. It was one of the parts that I appreciated more on second view; it kind of snuck up on me. It's a different kind of darkness and horror, but I love that you made this political side of it into its own vid.
